Wyoming Stroke Care Gets $5.2 Million Boost to Improve Rural Access

Stroke is the fifth-leading cause of death in Wyoming, and its rural geography often means long distances to specialized care, making timely treatment a critical challenge. To address this, the American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association, is launching a statewide initiative to strengthen the entire stroke care continuum. The effort, supported by a $4.5 million grant from The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust and a $785,000 commitment from the American Heart Association, will focus on improving coordination among 28 hospitals, EMS agencies, and rehabilitation providers across the state.

The initiative, known as Mission: Lifeline Stroke Wyoming, will run over three years and aims to enhance key elements of stroke care, including public awareness of stroke symptoms and the importance of calling 9-1-1, training for EMS to quickly identify and transport stroke patients to appropriate facilities, and ensuring hospital staff are well-prepared to treat and transfer patients when needed. It also seeks to improve coordination among stroke centers, ensure seamless discharge to high-quality post-acute rehabilitation, and establish a sustainable statewide quality improvement data system to monitor patient care and identify areas for enhancement.

“A stroke can change a life in an instant, and every minute from symptom onset to initial care matters when it comes to treatment and recovery,” said Nancy Brown, chief executive officer of the American Heart Association. “This investment is about creating a future where Wyoming residents can be confident that specialized stroke care is available when and where they need it. By advancing innovation and supporting recovery, we can help more people return to their families, their work and their communities after stroke.”

The Helmsley Charitable Trust has a long history of supporting rural healthcare initiatives. Since 2010, the trust has funded Mission: Lifeline programs in several other states, and this latest grant brings its total support for the American Heart Association’s initiatives to over $100 million. “Transforming stroke care requires a connected system that works seamlessly for patients when every second counts,” said Walter Panzirer, a trustee for the Helmsley Charitable Trust. “Wyoming has an opportunity to demonstrate how rural states can strengthen access to high-quality stroke care by connecting hospitals, EMS agencies, rehabilitation providers and community partners. We are proud to support this effort and help create lasting improvements that will benefit Wyoming families for years to come.”

Casper neurologist David Wheeler, M.D., a stroke care leader and American Heart Association volunteer, emphasized the importance of timely care. “When it comes to stroke, time lost is brain lost,” he said. “In Wyoming, patients may be separated from specialized stroke care by hours of travel. This statewide program will help ensure more patients are recognized, treated and transferred quickly, giving them the best possible chance for recovery. For many people, that can mean the difference between returning to an independent life and living with permanent disability.”

The initiative will involve two nationally certified Advanced Primary Stroke Centers in Casper and Cheyenne, along with community hospitals offering local services, telestroke capabilities, and transfer networks. By fostering collaboration and data-driven improvements, the program aims to create a sustainable infrastructure for stroke care that can serve as a model for other rural states.
