Voyageur Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (TSX-V: VM) (OTC Pink: VYYRF) has provided a corporate update on its barium and iodine contrast media projects, highlighting progress toward establishing a secure, North American supply chain for diagnostic imaging drugs. The company is focusing on completing two bankable feasibility studies (BFS) that underpin its vertically integrated strategy: the Voyageur Radiology Iodine & Barium Drug Manufacturing Project and the Bayer Iodine Project.
The diagnostic imaging market is projected to grow from US$6.77 billion in 2024 to US$13.86 billion by 2033 (Research Contrast). With barite classified as a critical mineral by the U.S. Geological Survey, Voyageur's approach includes controlling the entire value chain from mineral discovery to finished products, ensuring supply security and competitive costs.
For the barium segment, the company is advancing the Frances Creek project, which hosts an indicated and inferred mineral resource of 132,000 tonnes of pharmaceutical-grade barium sulfate. Recent testing confirmed an average grade of 98.8% BaSO4, exceeding the pharmaceutical grade threshold of 97.5% (see news release dated March 4, 2026). Voyageur has completed product development for five Health Canada-approved barium products with Alberta Veterinary Laboratories, generating approximately C$32,000 in initial sales. The company expects to deliver the Frances Creek BFS in the second half of 2026, following geotechnical drilling. A preliminary economic assessment previously valued the project with a net present value of $344 million (see news release dated January 11, 2022).
On the regulatory front, Voyageur has commenced the FDA approval process for barium products via the 505(b)(2) pathway, with a submission initiated in February 2026. The FDA is expected to provide pending requirements in Q1 2026, with the review process anticipated to take approximately one year. This could enable U.S. market entry as soon as mid to late 2027. The company also plans to advance a generic iodine FDA license in the second half of 2026.
For iodine, Voyageur is independently advancing a prefeasibility study for iodine contrast media production, integrating the Mueller iodine extraction process with the Streamline drug manufacturing platform. This project targets 35 million doses per year, leveraging iodine-rich brine from U.S. oil and gas operations. The company expects these processes to significantly lower manufacturing costs.
The Bayer Iodine Project, supported by a US$2.35 million funding arrangement, focuses on completing a BFS for iodine feedstock production. Under a potential second phase, Bayer would provide capital financing while Voyageur operates the project. All intellectual property developed will remain exclusively owned by Voyageur (see LOI signed December 20, 2024).
Voyageur is engaging a global engineering company to finalize the two BFS, positioning the company to become the only vertically integrated manufacturer of barium and iodine contrast media globally, with construction targeted to commence in 2027.
