Voyageur Pharmaceuticals Ltd. has announced the achievement of the first milestone under its non-dilutive Collaboration and Funding Agreement with Bayer AG, triggering a USD $1 million payment from the pharmaceutical giant. The milestone, which involved the submission of a complete feasibility work plan and timetable approved by Bayer, marks a significant step in the company's efforts to establish a domestic supply of high-purity iodine for use in contrast media drugs.
The company's Houston R&D team successfully demonstrated its proprietary Mueller iodine extraction process, producing iodine with 99.8% purity from produced water in the Anadarko Basin. This technical confirmation was essential for Bayer to advance the program. The transportable pilot plant is nearing completion and is scheduled for field operations this fall. With this payment, Voyageur has now received USD $1.35 million of the USD $2.35 million committed by Bayer, with the remaining $1 million to be released upon completion of the FEL-3 feasibility study.
Brent Willis, President and CEO of Voyageur, emphasized the importance of this milestone: "It confirms that the feasibility work is advancing as planned and triggers the first major non-dilutive payment under the collaboration. This capital is expected to further accelerate our iodine supply strategy and move us closer to validating a reliable North American source of high-purity iodine for use in contrast media drugs."
The feasibility study, supported by engineering firm Fluor Corporation, aims to define a demonstration-scale configuration of modular field units and a central hub for iodine production. The project proposes a staged rollout, beginning with 200 tonnes per year and potentially expanding to 1,000 tonnes per year. A central manufacturing facility would process iodine concentrate into USP pharmaceutical grade iodine for contrast drug production.
This development is strategically important as it addresses supply chain vulnerabilities in the contrast media market, which is estimated at approximately USD $7.06 billion. By securing a domestic, high-purity iodine source, Voyageur aims to reduce reliance on imports and lower operating costs, aligning with its vertically integrated strategy for barium and iodine-based imaging agents.
Upon successful completion of the feasibility study, Voyageur and Bayer may negotiate a long-term offtake agreement. The company is also progressing its Frances Creek barium project, which could complement its iodine initiatives. As Voyageur continues to achieve technical milestones, it strengthens its position in the radiology contrast media market.
