Voyageur Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (TSX.V: VM) (OTC Pink: VYYRF) announced significant progress in its patent-pending Mueller iodine extraction process, achieving 99.8% purity iodine with over 90% recovery in laboratory tests using real oilfield brine. This milestone supports the company's strategy to establish a domestic iodine supply for North America's radiology contrast media market while offering oil and gas producers a new revenue stream from produced brine.

The company has established a laboratory and fabrication site in Houston, Texas, where it has validated the process under controlled conditions, generating clean brine suitable for disposal or reinjection, consistent with zero-liquid-discharge objectives. A mobile, field-capable pilot unit sized to 80,000 liters per day has been constructed and is scheduled to begin field testing in the coming weeks using unaltered oilfield brine from the Anadarko and Permian basins. This transition from bench-scale to continuous field operation is critical for commercial deployment.

Key achievements include continuous operation with real brine, construction of the mobile pilot unit, generation of clean brine for integration into disposal or desalination infrastructure, and validation of scale-up parameters. The company also completed a preliminary design basis for a 200 metric ton per year plant and techno-economic assessments confirming a low-cost, environmentally favorable profile.

Field testing will provide real-world operating data to support the design of modular, relocatable production units capable of recovering iodine from brine at multiple saltwater disposal sites. The modular concept allows 200-tonne-per-year field units to produce iodine concentrate, which is then transported to a central hub for final polishing, prilling, and packaging. Engineering work is progressing on these systems, with subsequent phases expected to advance through front-end loading stages to refine cost estimates and commercial deployment plans.

For oil and gas operators and midstream companies, produced brine represents a largely untapped resource: billions of barrels are handled and disposed of annually at significant cost, yet only a small fraction of the iodine they contain is recovered. Voyageur aims to be the first to profitably extract iodine from this source, contributing to the industry's broader effort toward brine valorization. The company's vertically integrated strategy seeks to improve supply-chain security, reduce reliance on imported raw materials, and lower operating costs for contrast media production.

This work supports our broader strategy of building a secure, vertically integrated supply chain for radiology drugs.” He added that the company plans to develop up to 1,000 tonnes of annual iodine production capacity to support future pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Voyageur's staged approach aims to validate iodine recovery in the field, advance modular production, and ultimately support iodine-based drug manufacturing. By developing the Mueller process alongside its Frances Creek barium project, the company is positioning itself across key parts of the medical imaging contrast media value chain.
