The World Council on City Data (WCCD) has officially awarded Vinhomes Green Paradise - Can Gio the Interim Custom ISO 37122 Smart City Certification, recognizing the project's significant progress in aligning with international standards for smart and sustainable urban development. This milestone positions the mega urban development in Vietnam as a global pioneer, setting new benchmarks for greenfield projects worldwide.
The certification, announced on August 5, 2026, follows a comprehensive assessment based on a customized indicator framework developed by WCCD specifically for greenfield projects. This framework incorporates core principles of ISO 37122, one of the world's most respected standards for measuring smart city performance. Dr. Patricia McCarney, President & CEO of WCCD, stated, "This certification recognizes Vinhomes' long-term vision and commitment to developing a smart, sustainable, and future-ready urban model." She added that the project is now equipped with a powerful data baseline to propel success and ensure full ISO 37122 certification once operations commence.
The significance of this certification extends beyond Vietnam. According to Dr. McCarney, it is a "global first, setting a new precedent for greenfield developments in cities worldwide." This achievement underscores the growing importance of standardized metrics in guiding urban development toward sustainability and resilience, and it positions Vinhomes Green Paradise as a model for future cities.
The project's unique attributes contribute to its pioneering status. Located adjacent to the UNESCO-recognized Can Gio Mangrove Biosphere Reserve, spanning over 75,000 hectares, the development covers 2,870 hectares with a construction density of only 16%. Vinhomes is implementing an enhanced ESG++ model structured around five pillars: Environment, Social, Governance, Regeneration, and Climate Adaptation. This approach aims to achieve 100% clean electricity from renewable sources and 100% net-zero emission transportation upon full operation.
The certification also highlights the project's commitment to biodiversity and ecosystem regeneration, aligning with Ho Chi Minh City's climate adaptation strategy. A Forest Regeneration and Climate Adaptation Fund will be established to finance research and restoration, with a focus on regenerating the Can Gio mangrove ecosystem. This initiative reflects a comprehensive approach to urban development that balances growth with environmental stewardship.
Mr. Chulse Oh, Head of AX Group at Korea Management Association Consultants (KMAC), commented, "The award of the WCCD Interim Custom ISO 37122 Smart City Certification marks an important milestone in realizing the vision of a world-class smart city in Vietnam." KMAC will continue to support the project in developing smart city solutions and implementation strategies during the operational phase.
Vinhomes Green Paradise has also become the first Official Participant in the "7 Wonders of the Future Cities" campaign initiated by New7Wonders, further reinforcing its pioneering vision. The certification is a key step in the project's journey toward becoming a benchmark future city for the region and the world, demonstrating how data-driven planning and international collaboration can shape sustainable urban environments.
