The Better World Regulatory Coalition Inc. (BWRCI) announced the formation of the Vertical Stack Coalition, a standards-based framework designed to address the growing demand for dispatchable, scalable power within urban environments. The initiative aims to transform how cities approach energy infrastructure by moving away from horizontal expansion toward vertical integration, utilizing molten salt battery technology to achieve near-zero emissions.

The Vertical Stack architecture reimagines energy storage by building upward within urban-compatible structural envelopes, similar to how skyscrapers maximized space in cities. Each installation is designed to deliver multi-gigawatt-hour daily output with utility-scale dispatch characteristics, modular replication, and structural loads within conventional high-rise limits. According to BWRCI, this approach avoids the bottlenecks associated with transmission corridors and lengthy permitting timelines that plague horizontal energy expansion.

By design, the system uses commercial molten salt batteries, which are considered near-zero emission during their operational phase. Life-cycle assessments indicate molten-salt storage can have a global warming potential as low as 0.0306 kg CO2 eq/kWh, significantly lower than many other storage types. The chemistry does not exhibit lithium-style thermal runaway, relies on non-flammable materials, and operates within contained thermal systems, enhancing safety.

The technology is also designed for full domestic sourcing, reducing geopolitical exposure and eliminating lithium bottlenecks. This aligns with the JPMorganChase Security and Resiliency Initiative, which emphasizes resilient, domestically anchored energy infrastructure. The architecture supports institutional-grade deployment, with construction timelines compressed by 80-90% compared to traditional builds due to parallelized fabrication and foundation sequencing.

Vertical Stack is designed to complement solar generation by storing midday oversupply for evening demand, enabling higher solar penetration without new land expansion and reducing curtailment. It is also electrically compatible with modular nuclear generation, allowing load-matched pairing with small modular reactors. Furthermore, with appropriate inverter and switching design, installations can support islanded operation, controlled ramp sequencing, and microgrid restoration, providing BlackStart capability for urban grids.

The coalition emphasizes community and municipal ownership models, enabling consumers to become co-owners of the infrastructure. This localized energy authority is intended to stabilize local grids, keep critical compute running during disruptions, and support defense and industrial campuses. The first installations will define the category, and cities that move early will control dispatch capacity within their own footprint.
