The Italian Barrel Earns 2026 Wine Spectator Award of Excellence

The Italian Barrel, an intimate Northern Italian restaurant in New Orleans' French Quarter, has been honored with the 2026 Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, recognizing its exceptional wine program. The award is part of Wine Spectator's annual Restaurant Awards, which celebrate the world's best restaurants for wine. This year, 4,012 restaurants received awards across three levels: the Award of Excellence, the Best of Award of Excellence, and the Grand Award. The Italian Barrel earned the Award of Excellence, which requires at least 75 wine selections and a well-chosen assortment of quality producers that match the menu in price and style.

Marvin R. Shanken, Chairman and CEO of Wine Spectator, noted that the restaurant industry is rapidly transforming as diners become more selective about when, how, and what they drink. "As wine drinkers grow more mindful, restaurants are adapting with creative wine programs," he said. "Congratulations to the 4,012 restaurants that earned a Restaurant Award and continue to elevate the wine experience for guests around the world."

Lori and Kevin Cates, co-owners of The Italian Barrel, emphasized that wine is an integral part of the dining experience at their restaurant. "Wine is part of the natural rhythm of a meal at The Italian Barrel—not an afterthought, but something to explore slowly, share generously and enjoy course by course," they said. "This recognition belongs to our entire team, whose knowledge, care and hospitality make every bottle and every table feel personal."

The Italian Barrel, located at 1240 Decatur Street, was founded by Verona-born Chef Samantha Castagnetti and is now stewarded by the Cates. The restaurant honors Northern Italian traditions through seasonal pastas, composed secondi, and carefully sourced ingredients, complemented by a deeply Italian wine program. The recognition from Wine Spectator highlights the restaurant's commitment to providing a wine-centric dining experience that encourages guests to slow down and savor their meal.

The Wine Spectator Restaurant Awards have been recognizing excellence in wine service since 1981. The special Restaurant Awards issue is available on newsstands July 21, 2026.
