Star of the West Milling Company has launched its 2026 Sustainable Tracking of Agronomic Resources (STAR) program, a farmer-focused initiative that incorporates Ostara’s CG P2X™ fertilizer to help growers achieve measurable sustainability outcomes. The program, which targets participants in the Great Lakes Grain Initiative, is supported by a grant from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service’s Advancing Markets for Producers (AMP) program. Farmers who adopt or expand sustainability practices when supplying wheat, dry beans, or food-grade soybeans can receive incentives of up to $50 per acre.
The STAR program is designed to address the growing demand from food companies for credible data on supply chain impacts. By tracking agronomic resources and using innovative fertilizers like CG P2X, Star of the West can provide downstream partners with verified sustainability metrics, helping them meet increasing reporting requirements. This aligns with broader industry trends where consumers and regulators are pushing for greater transparency in agricultural production.
Ostara’s CG P2X fertilizer is a key component of the program. Described as the first highly efficient phosphate fertilizer that releases nutrients in response to crop demand, it aims to improve nutrient use efficiency and reduce environmental impact. The fertilizer is part of Ostara’s product line, which includes CG Pearl® made through advanced nutrient recovery. Ostara distributes its products through a network of retailers and distributors in North America and Europe.
Star of the West, a 156-year-old company headquartered in Frankenmuth, Michigan, operates 32 locations across six states. Its divisions include agronomy, bean processing (soy, edible, dry, and organic), corn, wheat, and flour milling. The company also runs an organic division, Everbest Organics, in Michigan, Minnesota, and North Dakota. The STAR program represents a strategic effort to create value for farmers while meeting market demands for sustainable sourcing.
The announcement highlights the importance of partnerships in advancing agricultural sustainability. By leveraging USDA support and innovative fertilizers, Star of the West aims to make sustainability practices economically viable for farmers.
