The Georgia Latino Film Alliance (GALFA) has announced that Roberto Sanchez, a Cuban-born actor, writer, director, and producer, will receive the Excellence in Filmmaking Award at the 15th Annual Georgia Latino International Film Festival (#GALIFF2026). The ceremony is scheduled for September 30, 2026, at Atlanta's Fox Theatre, during Hispanic Heritage Month.
Sanchez, who served 11 years in the U.S. Navy, has amassed over 150 film and television credits over a quarter-century. His breakout role came in John Singleton's 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003), and he has since appeared in acclaimed series such as Apple TV+'s Palm Royale and Cape Fear. His recent work includes roles in Running Point (Netflix), Dexter: Original Sin (Showtime/Paramount+), and BMF (Starz).
Beyond acting, Sanchez has expanded into writing, directing, and producing, with his upcoming romantic drama The Café exploring themes of love and regret. His career exemplifies resilience and self-determination, according to GALFA CEO Dr. Jose Marquez, who noted Sanchez's role in mentoring emerging talent and redefining Latino stories globally.
Yvette Moise, President and Co-Founder of GALFA, emphasized Sanchez's impact behind the camera, stating he is actively engineering career pathways for Latino and Afro-Latino creators. Sanchez himself expressed humility at the honor, sharing it with storytellers working to ensure their voices are heard.
The 15th GALIFF will be a five-day celebration, including a retrospective of Sanchez's career and a commemoration of 150 Years of Mexican Filmmaking. The event is supported by sponsors including the Fox Theatre, Olé Mexican Foods, and Fulton Films.
