Quantum BioPharma Ltd. (NASDAQ: QNTM) (CSE: QNTM), a biopharmaceutical company focused on innovative therapies for neurodegenerative and metabolic disorders, recently participated in the BioMedWire Podcast. During the program, Executive Co-Chairman and Co-Founder Anthony Durkacz outlined the company's strategy for advancing Lucid-MS, its lead drug candidate for multiple sclerosis, and discussed the commercial opportunity surrounding its unbuzzd product.
Durkacz highlighted that Lucid-MS aims to address mobility damage associated with multiple sclerosis. The company has filed an investigational new drug application for a Phase 2 clinical trial, which could represent the candidate's first administration to human MS patients. This milestone is critical for Quantum BioPharma as it transitions from preclinical success to clinical validation. In preclinical models, Lucid-MS has shown the ability to prevent and reverse myelin degradation, the underlying mechanism of multiple sclerosis.
In addition to its clinical pipeline, Durkacz discussed unbuzzd, a commercially available product designed to accelerate alcohol metabolism. Quantum BioPharma invented unbuzzd and spun out its over-the-counter version to Unbuzzd Wellness Inc. (UWI), a company led by industry veterans. Quantum BioPharma retains a 19.84% ownership stake in UWI and is entitled to royalty payments of 7% of sales from unbuzzd until total payments reach $250 million, after which the royalty drops to 3% in perpetuity. The company also retains 100% of the rights to develop similar products or alternative formulations for pharmaceutical and medical uses.
This dual strategy of combining clinical-stage pharmaceutical development with commercial products like unbuzzd provides Quantum BioPharma with a balanced approach. The revenue from unbuzzd can help fund the costly clinical trials for Lucid-MS while reducing dilution for shareholders. Durkacz emphasized that the company is committed to addressing challenging conditions such as multiple sclerosis, metabolic disorders, and alcohol misuse.
