In the wake of personal tragedy, Dr. Chuck F. Betters, founder of MARKINC Ministries, has released a new book titled Learning to See When the Lights Go Out. The book, which draws from sermons he preached in the weeks following the sudden death of his sixteen-year-old son, Mark, explores the intersection of grief, faith, and hope. It is a resource for anyone grappling with loss or profound suffering, offering a candid look at how trust in God can endure even in the darkest moments.
The book's origin is rooted in a life-altering phone call that Chuck and his wife, Sharon, received, informing them of their son's accident. In the aftermath, Dr. Betters found himself confronting the very questions that haunt many in similar circumstances: Can God's love and sovereignty coexist with such tragedy? The book, built on his sermons from that period, does not shy away from these difficult questions. Instead, it walks readers through them with transparency, demonstrating that pain can become a place where God's faithfulness shines brightly.
Dr. Betters' ministry has been profoundly shaped by this loss. Together with his wife, he founded MARKINC Ministries, an organization dedicated to providing help and hope to hurting people worldwide. The ministry now extends its reach through counseling, teaching, writing, and speaking. Reflecting on this journey, Dr. Betters said, 'What began as our greatest loss became a calling to help others navigate theirs.' He emphasizes that writing is not merely a profession but a calling, one that has allowed him to reach countless individuals through churches, radio, television, and online platforms.
With nearly five decades of pastoral experience, Dr. Betters has served churches in Philadelphia and Delaware, founded Red Lion Christian Academy, and pastored Glasgow Reformed Presbyterian Church for over thirty years. He is also the author of Teaching Them Young and Harlots & Heroines, and coauthor of Treasures of Faith. His writing journey, inspired by Charles Spurgeon, can be summarized in three words: loss, hope, purpose. When asked about writer's block, he simply says, 'Perseverance.'
Now living in Florida, Dr. Betters continues to lead MARKINC Ministries, enjoying time with his wife, their four children, fourteen grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren. For those facing grief or unanswered questions, Learning to See When the Lights Go Out offers more than sympathy; it provides the assurance that even in life's valleys, God remains faithful. The book is published by Lucid Books, an independent hybrid publisher based in the Houston area, which aims to help authors inspire and enrich readers' lives.
