Applications are open until September 15, 2026, and eligible students must be enrolled at accredited U.S. colleges, universities, or graduate schools.
Courtney M. Werning, Esq., a partner at the firm, emphasized the urgency of the initiative. "We're raising awareness of that fact while simultaneously warning the American public, through the college-aged applicants, of how bad this is. People should be checking in on their parents and grandparents right now," she said. Werning noted that cryptocurrency fraud has become a significant portion of the firm's caseload, and they expect it to continue growing in 2026.
The scholarship requires students to write a 500- to 1,000-word essay that includes at least three actionable strategies to combat fraud, one personal action they could take to protect their families or communities, and an explanation of why their proposed solutions would succeed. This initiative aims to engage the younger generation in fraud prevention while raising public awareness.
Meyer Wilson Werning has over 75 years of combined experience in helping individuals recover financial losses from fraud and misconduct, having recovered more than $350 million for clients. The firm's broader educational efforts include 11 Continuing Legal Education (CLE) sessions conducted last year and appearances in publications like USA Today to educate professionals and the public about financial fraud prevention.
Interested students can apply on the firm's scholarship page and must include their essay, proof of enrollment, and unofficial transcripts. The scholarship underscores the importance of proactive measures against the increasing threat of cryptocurrency scams, which often target vulnerable individuals through sophisticated online manipulation and fake investment platforms.
The announcement comes as cryptocurrency fraud continues to rise, with scammers using phishing schemes, fraudulent exchanges, and fake platforms to deceive investors.
