Lonza, the world’s leading contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO), has announced the appointment of Samanta Cimitan as its first Chief Commercial Officer (CCO), Senior Vice President and Member of the Extended Executive Committee. She will join the company by January 1, 2027, according to a press release. This newly created role is a strategic move under the "One Lonza" initiative, aimed at streamlining customer engagement and commercial operations across all business platforms.
Cimitan brings extensive experience in the CDMO industry, currently serving as Chief Executive Officer of the Celonic Group. Previously, she spent nearly 13 years at Lonza in various commercial and strategy leadership positions, including Vice President of Group Operations Strategy. Her familiarity with Lonza’s operations and her track record in commercial strategy and partnership development make her well-suited for this role.
In her new position, Cimitan will lead Strategic Enterprise Account Management, Global Marketing, and Commercial Excellence. She will have direct responsibility for Lonza’s strategic accounts and will work to harmonize the go-to-market approach across the entire organization. The goal is to make it easier for customers to access Lonza’s full end-to-end offerings globally, spanning all three business platforms.
Wolfgang Wienand, CEO of Lonza, commented on the appointment: "Samanta’s appointment to the new role of Chief Commercial Officer is another important step in building One Lonza and making the full power of the Lonza Engine work for our partners in the pharmaceutical industry. Our ambition is clear: Every customer should benefit from the unique breadth of our science, technology and manufacturing capabilities, helping them translate their breakthrough innovations into viable therapies for patients worldwide."
This move signals Lonza’s intensified focus on commercial excellence and customer-centricity. By creating a dedicated CCO role, Lonza aims to strengthen its competitive position in the CDMO market, where customer relationships and seamless service delivery are critical. The appointment also reflects a broader industry trend toward integrated commercial strategies as CDMOs expand their service offerings.
Cimitan’s leadership at Celonic, where she transformed the company into a focused biologics CDMO, demonstrates her ability to drive growth and operational improvements. Her return to Lonza is expected to inject fresh momentum into the company’s commercial operations, particularly in managing strategic accounts and enhancing marketing effectiveness.
The announcement comes as Lonza continues to execute its One Lonza strategy, which seeks to unify its diverse capabilities into a cohesive offering. The company reported sales of CHF 3.4 billion and CORE EBITDA of CHF 1.2 billion in the first half of 2026, underscoring its significant market presence. With a global team of approximately 20,000 colleagues, Lonza works with pharma and biotech firms to bring innovative therapies to patients worldwide.
Industry analysts view this appointment as a positive step for Lonza, as it aligns commercial leadership with the company’s strategic goals. The role is designed to break down silos and present a unified front to customers, potentially increasing cross-selling opportunities and improving customer satisfaction.
