LCIF Awards $228,641 Vision Grant to Expand Beauty of Sight Eye Bank, Enhancing Vision Care Access Across Florida

Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) has awarded a $228,641 Vision Grant to Lions District 35-N to support the expansion and equipping of the Beauty of Sight eye bank, formerly known as the Florida Lions Eye Bank. The grant, which is a matching grant funded through the contributions of Lions clubs across District 35-N and Multiple District 35, will upgrade laboratory capabilities and increase the organization's capacity to serve patients throughout Florida.

The expanded facility will allow Beauty of Sight to provide more sight-restoring corneal tissue, produce specialized ocular biologic therapies, and support ophthalmic research, education, and surgical training. The upgrade also positions the eye bank to adopt emerging technologies and therapies that are advancing vision care. According to Elizabeth Fisher, District Governor for Lions District 35-N, "Lions have been leaders in the fight against blindness for more than a century, and we are deeply grateful to Lions Clubs International Foundation for helping make this Vision Grant possible." The grant reflects the dedication of Lions in the region to improving lives through sight restoration.

Beauty of Sight, located within Bascom Palmer Eye Institute—the #1 ranked eye hospital in the nation by U.S. News & World Report—has served patients and physicians for over six decades. The organization's new laboratory, situated just blocks from the medical campus, will enable expanded services while maintaining close collaboration with Bascom Palmer. Elizabeth Fout, Executive Director of Beauty of Sight, stated, "This grant represents a powerful investment in the future of vision care. With LCIF's support and the dedication of Lions throughout our district, we will be able to enhance our laboratory capabilities, expand our services throughout Florida, and ultimately serve more patients who rely on sight-restoring treatments."

The laboratory expansion is part of a broader strategic initiative to prepare for innovations transforming eye banking and ophthalmic care. Joel Levenston, PVDG and President of the Board of Beauty of Sight, noted, "This investment in our new laboratory ensures that the organization remains positioned to support emerging technologies and therapies that are shaping the future of eye banking and ophthalmic care." The partnership among LCIF, Lions District 35-N, and Beauty of Sight will strengthen the region's ability to provide sight-saving care and expand access to advanced treatments for patients facing vision loss.

Beauty of Sight, founded in 1962, is a nonprofit eye bank that annually provides more than 1,000 corneas for transplant surgeries, prepares over 1,600 batches of Serum Tears, and supplies nearly 800 ocular tissues for research and education.
