IWUF 4th Taolu World Cup Concludes in Hainan, Boosting Wushu's Olympic Debut

The IWUF 4th Taolu World Cup successfully concluded in Haikou, Hainan, China, on July 8, 2026, drawing 206 participants from 29 countries and regions. The event featured 11 men's and 11 women's events across fist routines, long weapons, short weapons, and duilian, with 22 gold medals awarded over two days. As one of the six flagship official events of the International Wushu Federation (IWUF), the Taolu World Cup represents the highest level of elite competition in the global taolu discipline. This November, wushu will make its historic debut as an official medal sport at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, marking the first incorporation of this traditional Chinese martial art into the Olympic program.

The competition was the first high-level international wushu single-discipline event hosted by Hainan since the establishment of the Hainan Free Trade Port. Leveraging the port's unique geographical and policy advantages, including visa-free access for citizens of 86 countries and a 240-hour transit visa-exemption policy, overseas participants, technical officials, and media personnel enjoyed fast-track customs clearance. Specialized competition equipment benefited from zero-tariff treatment and simplified cross-border customs procedures, further enhancing the event's efficiency and appeal.

Hainan's rich wushu culture, shaped by centuries of inheritance and fusion of diverse martial arts schools, features a distinctive 'Qiong-style' system. Two counties and one city—Tunchang, Qiongzhong, and Wanning—have been designated as 'National Wushu Hometowns,' reflecting deep-rooted local traditions. Indigenous fighting styles such as Li Family Fist, Tunchang Pochen Five-Form Stakes, and Wanning Mazai Kung Fu have been passed down through generations, adding cultural depth to the event.

Concurrently, Hainan hosted the inaugural Hainan International Wushu Culture Month, featuring multiple 'wushu + tourism' travel routes. These activities allowed domestic and international guests to enjoy Hainan's island scenery and duty-free shopping benefits while attending high-level competitions. Looking ahead, Hainan plans to integrate wushu elements into its sports-tourism product system, developing themed tourist destinations, study bases, and signature events. The goal is to establish 'spectator travel' as a new model for cultural tourism and position Hainan as a global hub for wushu development and cultural exchange.

Separately, the 43rd Executive Committee Meeting of the IWUF decided that Haikou City will host the 12th Sanda World Cup, further solidifying Hainan's role in promoting wushu internationally. The success of the Taolu World Cup underscores the growing global appeal of wushu and its potential to drive cultural and economic benefits through sports tourism.
