Helus Pharma Appoints Michael Halstead as CEO Amid Late-Stage Pipeline Progress

Helus Pharma (NASDAQ: HELP) (Cboe CA: HELP) has appointed Michael Halstead as chief executive officer, effective immediately, as the clinical-stage company prepares to navigate late-stage development and potential commercialization of its lead investigational therapy. Halstead brings more than 25 years of biopharmaceutical leadership experience, most recently serving as president of Intra-Cellular Therapies, where he oversaw the development and commercialization of CAPLYTA, supported pipeline expansion, and helped guide the company through its $14.6 billion acquisition by Johnson & Johnson in 2025.

The leadership transition comes at a critical juncture for Helus Pharma. The company has completed enrollment in the Phase 3 APPROACH trial evaluating HLP003, a proprietary novel serotonergic agonist for the adjunctive treatment of major depressive disorder, with topline data expected in the fourth quarter of 2026. Enrollment is also ongoing in the EMBRACE pivotal study, while the company advances HLP004 for generalized anxiety disorder. HLP003 has received Breakthrough Therapy Designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, underscoring its potential to address significant unmet need in mental health.

“Michael’s proven track record in launching innovative therapies and scaling commercial organizations makes him the ideal leader to guide Helus Pharma through its next phase of growth,” said a company spokesperson. “His experience with CAPLYTA and his strategic acumen will be invaluable as we near data readouts and prepare for potential market entry.”

Halstead’s appointment is expected to bring a strong commercial focus to the company, which has positioned itself as a leader in developing novel serotonergic agonists designed to promote neuroplasticity. These synthetic molecules aim to activate serotonin pathways believed to be involved in brain repair, offering potential durable improvements for patients with depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions.

The company’s pipeline includes HLP003 for major depressive disorder and HLP004 for generalized anxiety disorder, alongside an extensive research portfolio of investigational compounds. Helus Pharma operates in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Ireland, and its shares trade on NASDAQ and Cboe Canada under the ticker symbol HELP.

The announcement of Halstead’s appointment signals a strategic move to bolster leadership as the company approaches pivotal clinical milestones. The completion of enrollment in the APPROACH trial and the anticipated topline data in 2026 are key catalysts that could reshape the treatment landscape for depression. With a focus on novel mechanisms of action, Helus Pharma aims to offer alternatives to traditional antidepressants, which often have delayed onset and limited efficacy.

“I am excited to join Helus Pharma at this transformative time,” Halstead said. “The company’s innovative approach and robust clinical programs hold great promise for patients. I look forward to working with the team to advance HLP003 and HLP004, and to build a successful commercial organization.”

As Helus Pharma continues to progress its late-stage programs, the appointment of an experienced CEO like Halstead is likely to enhance investor confidence and position the company for future growth. The company’s commitment to addressing mental health conditions through novel science remains at the forefront of its mission.
