HDBank has made history by securing a US$721 million international syndicated social loan, the largest ever raised by a Vietnamese organization. The signing took place on July 30, with participation from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Standard Chartered, and other international financial institutions. This landmark deal signals strong global investor confidence in HDBank and Vietnam's long-term economic prospects.
The proceeds from this social loan will be utilized to expand access to finance for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), with a particular focus on women-owned businesses. This initiative supports financial inclusion and sustainable development in Vietnam, aligning with the country's goals of fostering inclusive growth. The loan structure adheres to the Social Loan Principles and HDBank's Sustainable Finance Framework, ensuring that the funds are used for projects with positive social outcomes.
The transaction attracted significant interest from international investors, with commitments reaching US$721 million, approximately 60% above the original target. This oversubscription reflects the high demand for sustainable investment opportunities in Vietnam. The Asian Development Bank and Standard Chartered acted as joint coordinators, while ANZ, Cathay United Bank, Commerzbank, Maybank Securities, MUFG Bank, and the State Bank of India served as mandated lead arrangers and bookrunners.
The CEO of Standard Chartered Vietnam highlighted the significance of the deal, stating that it is the largest syndicated social loan ever raised by a Vietnamese organization. He noted that this achievement reflects investors' confidence in HDBank's leadership and demonstrates optimism about Vietnam's long-term growth prospects and the growing appeal of the country's sustainable finance market among global investors.
At the signing ceremony, Dr. Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, Permanent Vice Chairwoman of HDBank's Board of Directors, described the loan as a new milestone for the bank. She emphasized that this is HDBank's first financing facility dedicated exclusively to social initiatives, including programs supporting women. Dr. Thao also acknowledged HDBank's long-standing commitment to community development through various programs supporting businesses, healthcare, education, culture, sports, women, and children.
Tran Hoai Nam, HDBank's Permanent Deputy CEO, added that the proceeds will strengthen the bank's medium- and long-term funding base while expanding lending to SMEs, particularly women-led businesses. This aligns with HDBank's strategic focus on sustainable finance and its role in promoting economic empowerment.
This record-breaking social loan builds on HDBank's previous successes in sustainable finance. Earlier, the bank secured US$270 million in green financing and US$380 million in sustainable finance from international development finance institutions, including IFC, ADB, Proparco, DEG, LeapFrog, FMO, BII, JICA, FinDev, and SMBC. These transactions underscore HDBank's position as a leader in sustainable banking in Vietnam.
The importance of this deal extends beyond HDBank. It highlights the growing interest of international investors in Vietnam's sustainable finance market and the country's commitment to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. By channeling funds to MSMEs and women-owned businesses, the loan aims to address financing gaps and promote economic inclusivity, which are critical for Vietnam's continued development.
In conclusion, HDBank's record social loan is a testament to the bank's strong governance and strategic vision, as well as Vietnam's attractiveness as an investment destination. It sets a precedent for future sustainable finance transactions in the region and reinforces the role of financial institutions in driving positive social impact.
