Greenhut Construction Celebrates 80 Years in Business, Defying Industry Odds

Greenhut Construction Company is celebrating its 80th anniversary in 2026, making it one of the longest-running construction firms in Northwest Florida. Founded in 1946 by Dudley Greenhut in Pensacola, the family-owned general contracting and construction management company now operates under third-generation president Ryan Greenhut. Its portfolio includes healthcare, education, aviation, industrial, and office sectors, with landmark projects such as Pensacola International Airport facilities, ST Engineering MRO Hangars 1 & 2, and the American Magic Pensacola port headquarters. Notably, 80% of the company’s work comes from repeat clients.

Reaching 80 years in construction is uncommon due to the industry's cyclical, capital-intensive nature and sensitivity to economic conditions. Greenhut Construction has weathered multiple recessions, hurricanes, the 2010 oil spill, and the COVID-19 pandemic – conditions that ended or contracted many of its peers. Ryan Greenhut attributes the company’s durability to adaptability and humility. “We have been through financial recessions, hurricanes, storms, oil spills, and a pandemic,” he said. “Our ability to adapt – and our team’s ability to adapt to any kind of new type of construction – is what has carried us through.” He added that the company continually earns its reputation rather than relying on its 80-year history.

Dudley Greenhut built the company’s early reputation on government and military contracts, working at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Eglin Air Force Base, Hurlburt Field, and on projects like the NASA Saturn V test stand at Redstone Arsenal. His son Bill, who joined in 1971, moved Greenhut from low-bid contracting to a construction management model prioritizing relationships and quality. Ryan has continued this model, focusing on Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. Upcoming projects include performing arts theaters at two high schools, Gulf Winds Credit Union headquarters, and work tied to the Port of Pensacola.

“The legacy is not about preserving every habit from the past,” Ryan said. “It is about preserving the things that matter – the accountability and the trust that are at the core of our mission. The idea that something is Greenhut-built means something.”
