Garuda Indonesia is advancing its service transformation by introducing a piece-based checked baggage policy, known as the Piece Concept, for tickets issued on or after September 1, 2026. The new policy replaces the previous weight-based system, offering passengers clearer baggage limits and increased allowances of up to 64 kilograms depending on route, travel class, and fare category.
Under the Piece Concept, Economy Class passengers on domestic routes will receive one checked piece weighing up to 23 kilograms, up from the previous 20 kilograms. Business and First Class passengers on domestic routes will receive two pieces weighing up to 32 kilograms each, totaling 64 kilograms, a significant increase from the previous allowances of 30 kilograms and 40 kilograms, respectively. On international routes, Economy Class passengers will receive two pieces weighing up to 23 kilograms each (46 kilograms total), while Business and First Class passengers will receive two pieces weighing up to 32 kilograms each (64 kilograms total). This represents increases of up to 34 kilograms compared to the previous policy.
Garuda Indonesia Director of Transformation Neil Raymond Mills said the implementation reflects the company's commitment to modernizing services and providing passengers with greater certainty. "Clearer limits on the number and maximum weight of baggage pieces will allow passengers to plan and prepare their baggage more easily, from the initial stages of their journey through to departure," Mills stated in a press release.
The Piece Concept is widely adopted across the global aviation industry. Mills noted that its implementation at Garuda Indonesia is expected to strengthen service standardization, support more efficient baggage handling, and provide passengers with greater certainty, including when connecting to international flight networks. Passengers whose tickets are issued before September 1, 2026, will continue to receive the baggage allowance stated on their tickets, even for travel after the implementation date.
