G2A.COM Survey Finds Choice Trumps Format for GTA VI Buyers

A recent survey by G2A.COM, the world's largest marketplace for digital entertainment, highlights that consumer choice is paramount when purchasing major video game releases. The survey of over 2,000 G2A.COM users found that for a highly anticipated title like Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI), 38% would prefer a digital download, while 37% would opt for a physical disc, and 25% expressed no preference or did not plan to buy. These findings suggest that rather than a clear winner between digital and physical formats, consumers increasingly expect options that cater to their individual preferences.

The implications for the gaming industry are significant. As digital distribution continues to dominate, the survey indicates that being a digital-first consumer does not mean wanting fewer choices. In fact, 47% of respondents said they would be less likely to buy a full-priced AAA title at launch if only one purchasing format was available. This underscores that flexibility and optionality are critical drivers of purchasing decisions. Furthermore, 69% stated that the ability to resell, trade, or lend games influences their decision, and 59% said collectible elements like steelbooks or art books could sway them. These factors highlight that value is derived not just from the game itself but from how it is acquired and owned.

The survey also touches on broader industry trends. 34% of respondents expect physical games to become a niche collector proposition within five years, while 23% believe physical discs will be nearly phased out for new releases. Additionally, 77% expressed concern about long-term game preservation in an increasingly digital market, with 58% very concerned. These concerns reflect a growing awareness of the need to balance digital convenience with the preservation of gaming history.

G2A.COM's marketplace data shows exceptional interest in GTA VI, with traffic to GTA VI-related pages rising 65-fold during a major surge in June, and July alone accounting for 48% of all GTA VI-related traffic between January and July. The game also became G2A.COM's most wishlisted title in 45 countries. This level of engagement demonstrates the global anticipation for the release, yet the survey reveals that even with such hype, players approach purchases pragmatically, considering factors like flexibility, price, and choice.

Katarzyna Jakubiec, Chief Business Officer at G2A.COM, commented, "GTA VI shows that the games market is entering a new phase of digital maturity. For players, speed and convenience are no longer the only priorities – they also want the freedom to choose and greater control over how they access and use the content they buy. Digital formats deliver immediacy and accessibility, while physical editions can still offer additional value to some players through collectability, resale and a greater sense of control. Our research suggests that the future of the market is not about one model replacing another, but about giving players the flexibility to choose what works best for them."

The findings have broader implications for digital entertainment. As distribution becomes increasingly digital, consumers expect more content from more sources across more platforms. With this abundance comes a growing expectation of control over how, where, and at what price they access entertainment. For marketplaces like G2A.COM, the opportunity lies in expanding possibilities rather than prescribing a single consumption model. In essence, the survey underscores that the future of digital entertainment is not about limiting choice but about multiplying it. As the industry evolves, catering to diverse consumer preferences will be key to success.
