Frontieras North America, an energy and environmental technology company, announced it has entered into a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Cora Terminal, LLC, a joint venture between Watco Companies, LLC and SCH Services, LLC, to develop a multi-phase FASForm™ production facility at the Cora Terminal in Rockwood, Illinois. This agreement represents a strategic expansion for Frontieras as it seeks to commercialize its patented FASForm™ Solid Carbon Fractionation technology, which converts coal into clean fuels, fertilizers, and industrial chemicals through a zero-waste process.
The proposed project would initially lease approximately 85 acres at Cora Terminal to construct a plant capable of processing 7,500 tons of coal feedstock per day. A subsequent expansion would add another plant on an additional 130 acres, bringing the total site to roughly 215 acres. At full buildout, the facility would receive approximately 5.5 million net tons of coal feedstock annually and produce a range of products including FASCarbon™, ultra-low-sulfur diesel, jet fuel, ammonium sulfate fertilizer, sulfuric acid, and naphtha. This scale underscores Frontieras's commitment to large-scale deployment of its technology.
This LOI is the third announced commercial site for Frontieras, following its first commercial facility currently under construction in Mason County, West Virginia, with an investment of $850 million. The Cora Terminal is well-positioned for this venture, as it can accommodate up to four unit trains simultaneously, has the capability to move more than 11 million tons of coal annually, and owns over 300 acres of developable land surrounding the terminal. The location provides robust logistical advantages for receiving feedstock and shipping finished products.
Under the terms of the LOI, the parties will proceed with site due diligence, engineering, permitting, infrastructure assessment, and the negotiation of definitive lease and transportation agreements. The LOI is an expression of mutual intent and does not constitute a binding commitment to proceed. Any definitive agreements will be subject to successful completion of due diligence, permitting, financing, and required approvals. This cautious approach reflects the complexities involved in large-scale industrial projects.
The significance of this deal extends beyond Frontieras's growth. It highlights the potential of advanced coal conversion technologies to provide cleaner energy solutions while utilizing abundant domestic coal resources. The project could create jobs and economic development in the Rockwood area, and its output of ultra-low-sulfur diesel and jet fuel could contribute to regional energy security. Moreover, the production of fertilizer and industrial chemicals aligns with agricultural and manufacturing needs.
For Frontieras, the Cora project is a key milestone in its strategy to demonstrate the viability and scalability of FASForm™ technology. Following the completion of its Regulation A+ public offering, the company is poised to advance multiple projects. The success of the Cora facility could pave the way for further deployments across the United States and globally.
The announcement comes at a time when the energy industry is under pressure to reduce emissions. Frontieras's zero-waste process offers a potential pathway to utilize coal with minimal environmental impact, producing valuable products instead of waste. This approach could appeal to policymakers and investors seeking transitional technologies that reduce carbon footprints while leveraging existing fossil fuel infrastructure.
As the LOI progresses, stakeholders will be watching closely. The outcome of due diligence and negotiations will determine whether the Cora project moves forward, and its success could influence the broader adoption of clean coal technologies. The company's progress can be tracked through its newsroom at Frontieras newsroom. For more details on the LOI, the full press release is available at this link.
