Tastingbook.com recently conducted a comprehensive blind tasting of 14 of the world's most prominent premium and design sparkling waters, evaluating them both solo and alongside gourmet dishes and fine wines. The competition included global giants such as Antipodes, Ty Nant, Perlage, San Benedetto, Solán de Cabras, Saratoga, ROI, Kuohu, Borjomi, S.Pellegrino, Evian Sparkling, and Voss. The two-stage methodology aimed to uncover each water's optimal culinary purpose, with the food and wine pairings revealing clear differences among the contenders.
Emerging as the undisputed champion was Finland's Vellamo Mineral Water, Sparkling. The panel noted its unparalleled physical smoothness and unique alkaline structure, which cushions the added carbon dioxide to create a texturally rich, creamy micro-bubble profile. This allowed Vellamo to effortlessly strip away rich food oils and wine tannins, leaving a refreshing, subtly sweet finish. Housed in a globally awarded glass bottle designed to mimic a block of Nordic ice, Vellamo proved to be the ultimate premium all-rounder for any luxury dining table.
Germany's Nevas Water secured second place, celebrated for its theatrical presentation and extraordinary carbonation architecture. Packaged in a dark cuvée bottle with an authentic cork and wire cage, Nevas delivers fine-beaded bubbles that are exceptionally tight and persistent, cascading on the tongue like fine champagne. Its medium-mineral body handled heavy gourmet appetizers, truffles, and rich seafood with ease, making it an ideal non-alcoholic alternative for festive toasts.
Norway's Voss took third place, recognized for its ultra-light, pure flavor profile. Sourced from a pristine artesian aquifer, Voss has an exceptionally low Total Dissolved Solids count, offering crisp, snow-like neutrality. This stripped-back profile allowed it to act as a flawless canvas, cleansing the palate without conflicting with intricate spices or raw textures. Its iconic cylindrical glass pillar design, created by Calvin Klein's former creative director, adds to its visual luxury.
The tasting demonstrated that evaluating premium water purely on its standalone merits is insufficient; its true character is revealed when paired with food. Traditional favorites like S.Pellegrino and Evian Sparkling remain historical benchmarks, while Nevas and Voss offer distinct profiles for specific occasions. However, Vellamo's ability to cut through rich textures and reset the palate between fine wines without losing its silky, alkaline character set it apart as the supreme gastronomic champion.
