The Pasadena Police Department's National Night Out event on August 7th brought together community members, local leaders, and families for an evening of engagement and education. Among the various attractions, the Drug Free World mobile exhibit stood out, making a powerful impact by engaging hundreds of attendees in proactive conversations about substance abuse prevention.
During the event, a significant number of local children and youth stepped forward to take the pledge to live a drug-free life, demonstrating a strong community commitment to health and safety. The interactive display, which included informational booths and demonstrations, provided a platform for open dialogue about the dangers of drugs.
The event also marked collaborative milestones for ongoing drug awareness initiatives in the region. The Pasadena Library formally accepted a supply of educational booklets to be made publicly available for families and students. Additionally, the Elks Club Drug Awareness Program acquired 400 educational booklets to distribute through their community outreach programs.
One standout moment came when an 8-year-old boy, who had just taken the Drug-Free Pledge with his older sister, made a insightful connection after seeing a public service announcement about the dangers of alcohol. He asked, "Oh wow! If you do drugs, can you get into an accident like the one in the video?" After receiving confirmation and learning that additional educational videos were available online, the boy eagerly asked for the website address, stating, "I'm going to watch all the videos."
The Foundation for a Drug-Free World, a nonprofit public benefit corporation, aims to empower youth and adults with factual information about drugs so they can make informed decisions and live drug-free. With a network of some 200 chapters worldwide, the foundation provides the secular Truth About Drugs program and materials free of charge, thanks to the support of sponsors such as the Church of Scientology.
Through a worldwide network of volunteers, the foundation has distributed 100 million drug prevention booklets, held tens of thousands of drug awareness events in some 180 countries, and aired Truth About Drugs public service announcements on more than 500 television stations. These efforts have helped people around the world learn about the destructive side effects of drugs and make informed decisions.
To further its mission, the foundation offers free Truth About Drugs e-courses, designed to help individuals learn about drugs at their own pace. The courses cover what drugs are, their composition, short- and long-term effects, and real stories from real people about popular drugs of choice.
