Dr. Valinda Nwadike Scholarship Seeks to Cultivate Future Physicians Committed to Maternal Health Equity

The Dr. Valinda Nwadike Scholarship for Medical Students has announced its annual call for applications, targeting undergraduate students across the United States who are committed to advancing healthcare equity. Established by Dr. Valinda Nwadike, MD, MPH, a physician and maternal health advocate, the scholarship aims to support future medical professionals focused on reducing disparities in maternal health, rural communities, and underserved populations.

Dr. Valinda Nwadike, whose career includes high-risk obstetrics, gynecologic surgery, and telehealth innovation, created the scholarship to extend her mission of equitable healthcare access. Through her work, including the development of the Southern Maryland Black Maternal Telehealth Alliance, she has emphasized the importance of culturally competent care. The scholarship encourages students to think critically about barriers to care and propose solutions.

Eligible applicants must be enrolled in an accredited U.S. undergraduate program and pursuing a healthcare-related career, such as pre-med, nursing, or public health with clinical intent. They are required to submit an original essay of 600–800 words responding to a prompt inspired by Dr. Nwadike's philosophy: "medicine is not just about diagnosis — it is about seeing the whole person: their zip code, their fears, their strength." Essays should draw on personal experiences with health disparities and explain how education, technology, or community partnerships can close gaps in care.

Selection criteria include authenticity, clarity of vision, writing quality, and alignment with the mission of improving maternal and community health outcomes. The scholarship provides a one-time award of $1,000. Applications must be submitted by January 15, 2027, via email to apply@drvalindanwadikescholarship.com, with the winner announced on February 15, 2027.

Dr. Valinda Nwadike, MD, MPH, who holds degrees from Johns Hopkins University and Columbia University, continues to influence maternal healthcare through education and mentorship. This scholarship represents an investment in the next generation of clinicians who will address systemic gaps in care.
