BRAIN Biotech, a specialist enzyme and biological solutions provider, announced that the European Patent Office has granted a patent for its CRISPR-BMC nuclease as a substance patent (EP4301852 B1). This patent, effective since March 18, 2026, covers European Unitary Patent countries, Great Britain, and Switzerland, with further applications pending in the US, Japan, and other key regions.
The BMC (BRAIN Metagenome Cas) nuclease family, developed through the company's BRAINBioIncubator, demonstrates high activity in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms, including bacteria, yeasts, fungi, plants, and mammalian cells. By generating precise double-strand breaks at defined genomic locations, the technology enables targeted modifications to enhance organism properties, particularly for microbial production strains such as E. coli, Bacillus, Pichia, and Aspergillus.
Adriaan Moelker, CEO of BRAIN Biotech, stated: 'I am very pleased that we have now secured robust patent protection for the CRISPR-BMC nucleases developed at BRAIN Biotech. Our technology, which is based on these nucleases, helps make manufacturing processes that utilize microorganisms more cost-effective.' He added that the company offers a business model for technology use across various application areas.
Alexander Pelzer, Head of R&D at BRAIN Biotech Zwingenberg, noted: 'CRISPR-BMC allows us to further accelerate the development of our own production organisms and strain development for our customers thanks to the speed and precision it offers.' The company relies on its decades of experience in molecular biology and microbiology to ensure reliable technology implementation.
The patent marks a milestone for BRAIN Biotech's freedom to use this proprietary technology in-house and in customer projects, opening significant potential for commercial application through licensing. The company has already granted licenses to companies in different fields and plans to expand licensing activities. This complements the previously patented CRISPR-BEC nucleases, further strengthening BRAIN Biotech's genome-editing portfolio.
BRAIN Biotech operates fermentation facilities in the UK and has additional production sites in Europe and the US. For more information, visit brain-biotech-group.com.
