International technology group ANDRITZ, in partnership with Slovak engineering firm VUJE, has been awarded a contract by VODOHOSPODARSKA VYSTAVBA to modernize the Gabcikovo hydroelectric power plant on the Danube River. This facility is Slovakia's largest hydroelectric plant and a critical component of the national energy grid, supplying approximately 10% of the country's electricity. The comprehensive upgrade aims to secure long-term, reliable, and sustainable power generation.

The project involves the renewal and modernization of the plant's electromechanical equipment, which currently has a total capacity of 720 MW. The order value is in the mid three-digit million-euro range and has been included in ANDRITZ's order intake for the third quarter of 2026. The modernization will gradually refurbish the eight Kaplan turbine-generator units to the latest technical standards, improving efficiency and availability while extending the service life of key equipment by at least 30 years.

The scope of supply includes model testing, engineering, manufacturing, installation, and commissioning. It also covers modernization of turbine and generator components, automation systems, excitation, protection, and control systems, as well as the renewal of transformers and auxiliary electrical systems. The work will be carried out sequentially to minimize disruptions and maintain the plant's availability during the modernization process.
