Nancy Brown, chief executive officer of the American Heart Association, has been recognized on The NonProfit Times 29th annual Power and Influence Top 50 list for the 11th time. The list honors leaders who have distinguished themselves as initiators and innovators in the nonprofit sector. Brown's recognition comes as the Association celebrates her 40 years of service, beginning in 1986 in Michigan and culminating in her role as CEO since 2008.
Under Brown's leadership, the American Heart Association has expanded its global influence in cardiovascular and brain health, accelerated scientific discovery, and launched initiatives such as Nation of Lifesavers and Go Red for Women. The organization is now the largest non-governmental funder of cardiovascular research in the United States. Brown's ability to build impactful partnerships and unite volunteers, supporters, and staff has been central to advancing the Association's mission.
“Being recognized alongside other remarkable leaders is truly an honor, especially as I reflect on 40 years of service to the American Heart Association,” said Brown. “It is my greatest honor to continue to serve this mission after four decades.” Lee Shapiro, volunteer board chair, noted that Brown's visionary leadership has positioned the Association to save more lives and create longer, healthier futures.
The recognition underscores the importance of Brown's work in advancing equitable health in all communities. For more information, visit The NonProfit Times Power and Influence Top 50. Additional resources are available on the American Heart Association website and via @HeartNews on X.
